Slave Island erhielt seinen Namen aus der Kolonialzeit Sri Lankas , als vor allem afrikanische Sklaven auf die Insel gebracht und dort untergebracht wurden. Heute ist die Insel für ihre dicht besiedelten Siedlungen und farbenfrohen, altertümlichen Gebäude bekannt, die, wie die in Pettah , über die Jahrzehnte erhalten geblieben sind.

Die Stadtentwicklung verändert jedoch langsam das Gesicht von Slave Island. Viele große neue Geschäftsgebäude stehen heute neben heruntergekommenen, überfüllten Vierteln und gehören Menschen, die dort seit Generationen leben. Hier gibt es auch einen seltenen Teil Colombos , in dem sich Kirche, Kovil, Moschee und Tempel in einem einzigen Block befinden.

Momentan ist es ein interessanter Ort, wo hohe neue Gebäude einen Kontrast zu vergilbten, eigenartigen Gebäuden bilden und neue Geschäfte in alten Gebäuden untergebracht sind – ein buntes Gemisch aus bunten Wänden und Graffiti (achten Sie auf die Werke des Straßenkünstlers C215). Die in die alten Gebäude gedrängten Häuserblöcke sind heute die Heimat vieler Muslime und bieten einen interessanten Anblick mit moosbedeckten Wänden, unpassenden Toren und Kindern, die über die Gleise hüpfen oder am Beira-See chillen.

Doch wie einige Stadtteile dürfte es unserer Meinung nach nicht mehr lange dauern, bis auch Slave Island ein elegantes, großstädtisches Makeover erhält. Schon jetzt scheinen Gewerbegebäude in die ehemaligen Wohngebiete vorzudringen. Effiziente Stadträume haben zwar ihren Reiz, doch ein Slave Island ohne seine Eigenheiten ist traurig. Colombo is the largest city and commercial capital of Sri Lanka. It is located on the west coast of the island and adjacent to Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte, the capital city of Sri Lanka. The great majority of Sri Lankan corporations have their head offices in Colombo. Some of the industries include chemicals, textiles, glass, cement, leather goods, furniture, and jewellery. In the city center is located South Asia's second tallest building - The World Trade Centre.

About Western Province

The Western Province is the most densely populated province of Sri Lanka. It is home to the legislative capital Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte as well to Colombo, the nation's administrative and business center. Western Province is divided into 3 main districts called Colombo (642 km²), Gampaha (1,386.6 km²) and Kalutara (1,606 km²) districts. As Sri Lanka's economic hub, all the major local and international corporations have their presence in the city and so do all the major designer and high street retailers, so be ready to indulge in some retail therapy in western province.
