Ratnapura-distriktet
Ratnapura är ett distrikt i Sabaragamuwa-provinsen, Sri Lanka. Det är ett av 25 distrikt i Sri Lanka, landets administrativa enhet på andra nivå. Staden får regn främst från sydvästmonsunerna från maj till september. Under de återstående månaderna av året förekommer också betydande nederbörd på grund av konvektiva regn. Den genomsnittliga årliga nederbörden är mellan 4 000 och 5 000 mm. Den genomsnittliga temperaturen varierar från 24 till 35 °C, och luftfuktigheten är hög. Staden ligger 21 m (69 fot) över havet.
Den ligger vid floden Kalu Ganga (Svart flod) i sydcentrala Sri Lanka, cirka 101 km (63 mi) sydost om landets huvudstad, Colombo. Ratnapura stavas också Rathnapura. Namnet 'Ratnapura' är ett sanskritord som betyder "stad av juveler", från de sanskritiska orden pura (stad) och ratna (juvel). Många av de framstående juvelhandlarna på Sri Lanka verkar från denna stad. Förutom juvelbrytning är staden känd för produktion av ris och frukt. Staden omges av stora plantager av te och gummi. Te som odlas i denna region kallas låglands-te. Det finns en väg till Sri Pada från Ratnapura. Utflykter inkluderar Sinharaja regnskogreservat och Udawalawe nationalpark. De omgivande områdena är populära för vandring och ett bra ställe för fågelskådning.
