Matara-distriktet
Matara är en stad vid Sri Lankas sydkust, 160 km från Colombo. Det är en av de största städerna i Sri Lanka. Staden har många spår av Sri Lankas koloniala förflutna. Den tredje längsta floden, Nilwala Ganga (Blå floden), delar den gamla staden från den nya.
Under 1500- och 1700-talet styrdes Matara av portugiserna och nederländarna. Områdets kultur och arkitektur är fortfarande synliga. Det populära fyret vid Point Dondra byggdes av nederländarna och anses vara ett av de vackraste och äldsta i Sri Lanka. Matara är en livlig och blomstrande handelsstad som nästan inte är beroende av turism – vilket ger en fascinerande inblick i det moderna srilankesiska livet. Huvudattraktionerna är stadens murar, nederländsk arkitektur, den välbevarade Matara Fort och stadslivet.
Paravi Dupatha-tempel är ett relativt modernt buddhistiskt tempel på Pigeon Island, en liten ö framför staden. Det nås via en elegant hängbro byggd 2008 (ersatte den tidigare bron som förstördes av tsunamin 2004). Templet ligger i vackra trädgårdar och innehåller många buddhastatyer samt en replika av fotavtrycket från Adam’s Peak.
Matara Fort byggdes 1560 av portugiserna och återuppbyggdes i stor utsträckning av nederländarna 1640 efter erövringen av Galle. Fortet består av en stor stenmur och ligger på halvön mellan Nilwala-floden och havet.
Holländska reformerta kyrkan i Matara byggdes 1706 av nederländarna inne i Matara Fort och restaurerades omfattande 1767 efter fortets återuppbyggnad 1762.
Star Fort ligger på västra sidan av Nilwala-floden. Fortet byggdes av nederländarna efter Matara-upproret 1761 för att skydda huvudfortet från flodangrepp. Konstruktionen av det unika stjärnformade fortet slutfördes 1765.
Gamla Nupe-marknaden byggdes 1784 av nederländarna, cirka 3,2 km från Matara Fort.
St. Mary’s Church ligger vid Beach Road. Datumet på porten (1769) hänvisar till återuppbyggnaden efter Matara-upproret 1762.
