About this experience
The Millennium Elephant Foundation is a charitable organisation established to rescue and care for captive elephants in Sri Lanka. Set across a 15-acre estate known as Samaragiri, it was founded in memory of its patron, Mr Sam Samarasinghe, and belongs to his family along with their elephants. Working in line with World Animal Protection, a global animal welfare organisation, the Foundation provides proper care facilities and medical services to captive elephants, while also raising awareness of the conditions these animals face across the country.
During a visit of around one hour, guests have the opportunity to observe the elephants in their sanctuary environment and walk alongside them, guided throughout by an accompanying guide. The Foundation's focus on welfare and education makes it a thoughtful and meaningful stop for those wishing to learn more about elephant conservation in Sri Lanka.
