A country rich in cultural heritage, the importance given to music in Sri Lanka spans across centuries. The music culture of our land is a tapestry that is so vibrant and regal and it has been woven with a diverse range of influences including religious rituals and entertainment. Some of the traditional percussion instruments that are still used such as the ath rabana (hand drum) can be considered as a part of the heart of Sri Lankan music.
Also known as the spinning rabana, these hand drums are available in 2 different sizes - 8” and 10” diameters. The hide of the rabana is made of goat skin while the wood is Jak. Played with one hand, some performers revolve the instrument on the tip of their fingers while some are spun in the air on special sticks and balanced on their heads or mouths. These visuals and traditional beats are hard to forget. Talented Raban players use their fingers to add variety and depth to the beats as well. Lakpura Ath Rabana can be used in cultural events and ceremonies.
