The Experience

Day 1: Colombo – Ratnapura – Induru Ganga – Palabaddala

Pickup from your hotel in Colombo and proceed to Ratnapura, Sri Lanka's renowned "City of Gems."

Upon arrival, meet your local guide and receive an introduction to the region's rich gem mining heritage before visiting Sri Lanka's largest primary gem market. Observe miners, traders, and collectors dealing with rough, cut, and polished gemstones, including sapphires, garnets, spinels, and zircons. Learn about the gemstone trade and interact with local merchants.

Enjoy a cup of traditional Sri Lankan tea and light refreshments at a local café before continuing to a working gem mine. Learn about traditional pit mining and river mining methods, observe mining operations, and experience basic gem panning techniques under supervision.

Afterward, visit a local lapidary workshop where skilled craftsmen demonstrate gemstone cutting and polishing techniques. Discover how rough stones are transformed into beautiful gemstones ready for international markets.
