Thanthirimale is an ancient and sacred Buddhist site located in the Anuradhapura District of Sri Lanka. Known for its historical significance and spiritual atmosphere, Thanthirimale was an important center for Buddhist monastic life in ancient Sri Lanka. The site is famous for its well-preserved ancient ruins, including the Thanthirimale Rajamaha Vihara, which dates back to the 3rd century BCE, believed to have been built during the reign of King Devanampiya Tissa.

The main attraction at Thanthirimale is its serene environment, with large rock formations, ancient stupas, meditation caves, and remnants of monastic complexes that provide insight into the monastic life and the spiritual practices of early Sri Lanka. The temple is also home to a sacred Bo tree, said to have been grown from a cutting of the original tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment.

Anuradhapura District

Anuradhapura is belongs to the North Central Province in to Sri Lanka. Anuradhapura is one of the ancient capitals of Sri Lanka, famous for its well-preserved ruins of ancient Lankan civilization. The city, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, lies 205 km north of the current capital Colombo in Sri Lanka.

In the sacred city of Anuradhapura and in the vicinity are a large number of ruins. The ruins consist of three classes of buildings, dagobas, monastic buildings, and pokuna (ponds).
