Polonnaruwa City
Polonnaruwa, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Sri Lanka, was the country's medieval capital (11th-13th century). Renowned for its well-preserved ruins, including the iconic Gal Vihara statues, it showcases impressive architecture, reflecting the grandeur of the ancient Sinhalese civilization.
Polonnaruwa Koninkrijk
Polonnaruwa, ook wel Pulathisipura genoemd en in de oudheid bekend als Vijayarajapura, is de hoofdplaats van het district Polonnaruwa in de Noordelijke Centrale Provincie, Sri Lanka. De moderne stad Polonnaruwa staat ook bekend als “New Town”, terwijl het andere deel van Polonnaruwa de koninklijke oude stad van het Koninkrijk Polonnaruwa blijft.
Het op één na oudste van alle Sri Lankaanse koninkrijken, Polonnaruwa, werd aanvankelijk gesticht als een militaire post door het Singalese koninkrijk. Het werd hernoemd tot Jananathamangalam door de Chola-dynastie na hun succesvolle invasie van de toenmalige hoofdstad van het land, Anuradhapura, in de 10e eeuw. De oude stad Polonnaruwa is uitgeroepen tot Werelderfgoed.
Oude Stad Polonnaruwa
De Oude Stad van Polonnaruwa is de plaats waar de goed bewaard gebleven ruïnes van de oude stad Polonnaruwa, een Werelderfgoed, zich bevinden. De ruïnes zijn verspreid over een groot gebied dat zich ongeveer 4 km van noord naar zuid uitstrekt. Onder de vele ruïnes bevinden zich de Citadel, het Quadrangle, Gal Vihara (Singalees: stenen tempel) en Lankatilaka, Gal Potha (Singalees: stenen boek), de Menik en Rankoth vihara boeddhistische heiligdommen, het Alahena Pirivena-klooster, Lankatilaka (Singalees: Sieraad van Lanka), de Kiri Vehera-stoepa, het Tivanka-patamaghara beeldhuis (boeddhistisch heiligdom), die allemaal een bezoek waard zijn.
Ten westen van de oude stad ligt het meerachtige Parakrama Samudra (Singalees: zee van Parakramabahu), een kunstmatig meer gebouwd in de 13e eeuw en in de jaren 1950 gerenoveerd.
Polonnaruwa Museum
Het Polonnaruwa Museum is het ideale startpunt voor een bezoek aan de oude stad Polonnaruwa: de indrukwekkende presentatie in het museum biedt een schat aan kennis die helpt bij het begrijpen van de talrijke ruïnes – bewaard gebleven, gerestaureerd en gerehabiliteerd – evenals het herstelde irrigatienetwerk dat bestaat uit kunstmatige regenwaterreservoirs en kanalen die water verdelen naar het landbouwdistrict van Polonnaruwa.

About Polonnaruwa District
Polonnaruwa is the 2nd largest city in north central province in Sri Lanka.
