Mimusops elengi (Spanish cherry)

  

Mimusops elengi, commonly known as Spanish cherry or “Moonamal” in Sinhala, is an evergreen tropical tree native to South and Southeast Asia. In Sri Lanka, it is admired for its fragrant white flowers, dense foliage, and cultural significance, often found in temple gardens and public parks as an ornamental tree.

The tree produces small, oval fruits that are edible when ripe and valued in traditional medicine for their astringent and anti-inflammatory properties. Its bark, flowers, and seeds are used in Ayurvedic formulations to treat dental issues, wounds, and digestive problems. The sweet scent of its flowers is used in garlands and offerings.

Spanish cherry trees are appreciated for their hard wood, which is durable and used in furniture and construction. The tree also serves ecological roles, providing shade, supporting birdlife, and contributing to air purification in urban and rural landscapes across Sri Lanka.

Mimusops elengi blooms mainly during the dry season and thrives in well-drained soils with plenty of sunlight. Available throughout the island, it continues to be a cherished part of Sri Lanka’s natural and cultural environment, combining beauty, utility, and tradition in a single species.
