Deegavapiya is een oude boeddhistische tempel die veel bezocht wordt vanwege zijn historische en religieuze betekenis. Het belang van Deegavapiya wordt gekoppeld aan legendes over bezoeken aan deze plek door Boeddha zelf. In recentere (middeleeuwse) tijden hebben de Singalese koningen Moorse en Nederlandse kolonisten in de naburige gebieden gevestigd. De bouw wordt naar verwachting eind 2023 voltooid.

Over het Ampara District

Ampara behoort tot de Oostelijke Provincie van Sri Lanka. Het is een afgelegen stad aan de oostkust van Sri Lanka, ongeveer 239 km van de hoofdstad Colombo. Ampara is de grootste provincie voor rijstproductie in het land en heeft de Indische Oceaan aan de oostkust van Sri Lanka als visserijbron. Het grootste deel van de bevolking is Singalees, terwijl Tamils en Moors ook in de kustgebieden van het district wonen.

Tussen 1988 en 2006 werd de provincie tijdelijk samengevoegd met de Noordelijke Provincie om de Noord-Oost Provincie te vormen. De hoofdstad van de provincie is Trincomalee. De bevolking van de Oostelijke Provincie was in 2007 1.460.939. De provincie is de meest diverse in Sri Lanka, zowel etnisch als religieus.

De Oostelijke Provincie heeft een oppervlakte van 9.996 vierkante kilometer (3.859,5 vierkante mijl). De provincie wordt in het noorden omringd door de Noordelijke Provincie, in het oosten door de Baai van Bengalen, in het zuiden door de Zuidelijke Provincie en in het westen door de Uva, Centrale en Noord-Centrale provincies. De kust van de provincie wordt gedomineerd door lagunes, waarvan de grootste de Batticaloa-lagune, de Kokkilai-lagune, de Upaar-lagune en de Ullackalie-lagune zijn.

About Ampara District

Ampara is belongs to the Eastern Province. of Sri Lanka It is a remote city on the East Coast of Sri Lanka, about 360 km from the capital city of Colombo.Ampara is the largest paddy harvesting province in the country, and has the Indian Ocean on the east coast of Sri Lanka as a fisheries resource. Most of the civilians are Sinhala, while Tamils and Moors also live in the coastal parts of the district.

The provinces have existed since the 19th century but they didn't have any legal status until 1987 when the 13th Amendment to the 1978 Constitution of Sri Lanka established provincial councils. Between 1988 and 2006 the province was temporarily merged with the Northern Provincee to form the North-East Province. The capital of the province is Trincomalee. The Eastern province's population was 1,460,939 in 2007. The province is the most diverse in Sri Lanka, both ethnically and religiously.
