Matara linn

Asukoht: Matara asub 160 km lõuna pool Colombost, Sri Lanka lõunarannikul.

Kuidas jõuda Matarasse: Matarasse saab sõita mööda peamaanteed Colombo–Galle–Matara ning ka mööda raudteeliini.

Ümbrus: Nilwala jõgi voolab India ookeani Matara ranna juures, jagades linna kaheks piirkonnaks: vana linn jõesuudmes ja uus linn mandril. Kuue realine Mahanama sild ühendab mandrit jõesuudmega.

Uus linn: Matara uus linn mandril laieneb igas suunas. Raudteejaam, pangad, poed, kriketiväljak ja Hollandi Tähekindlus on olulised maamärgid.

Vana linn: Matara vanalinn, tuntud ka kui jõesuudmes asuv vana koloniaalkvartal nimega Fort, on koduks vanale puhkemajale, Hollandi reformeeritud kirikule, bussijaamale, turule ja mošeedele.

Matara – transpordikeskus: Matara on Lõunaprovintsi peamine transpordikeskus, kus vana linnaosas asub hästi korraldatud bussijaam.

Majutus Mataras: Eelistatud majutuskohad Mataras on Polhena ja Medawatta rannad.

Polhena rand & Medawatta rand: Polhena rand pakub häid snorgeldamisvõimalusi, samal ajal kui Medawatta sobib suurepäraselt surfamiseks.

About Matara District

About Southern Province

The Southern Province of Sri Lanka is a small geographic area consisting of the districts of Galle,Matara and Hambantota. Subsistence farming and fishing is the main source of income for the vast majority of the people of this region.

Important landmarks of the Southern Province include the wildlife sanctuaries of the Yala and Udawalawe National Parks, the holy city of Kataragama, and the ancient cities of Tissamaharama, Kirinda and Galle. (Although Galle is an ancient city, almost nothing survives from before the Portuguese invasion.) During the Portuguese period there were two famous Sinhalese poets called Andare who was from Dickwella and Gajaman Nona who was from Denipitiya in Matara District, composing poems on common man.
