Matara ringkond
Matara on linn Sri Lanka lõunarannikul, 160 km Colombost. See on üks suurimaid linnu Sri Lankas. Linnas on palju koloniaalse mineviku jäänuseid. Kolmas pikim jõgi, Nilwala Ganga (Sinine jõgi), eraldab vana linna uuest.
16. ja 18. sajandil kuulus Matara portugallidele ja hollandlastele. Piirkonnas on endiselt nähtav kultuur ja arhitektuur. Kuulus tuletorn Point Dondras ehitati hollandlaste poolt ja see on üks kaunimaid ja vanimaid tuletorne Sri Lankas. Matara on hõivatud ja arenev kaubanduslinn, mis praktiliselt ei sõltu turismist – pakkudes huvitavat akent kaasaegsesse Sri Lanka ellu. Peamised vaatamisväärsused on linna vallid, hollandi arhitektuur, hästi säilinud Matara kindlus ja elav tänavaelu.
Paravi Dupatha tempel on suhteliselt kaasaegne budistlik tempel Pigeon Islandil, väiksel saarel linna ees. Selleni viib elegantne kaablisild jalakäijatele, ehitatud 2008. aastal (asendas 2004. aasta tsunami poolt hävinenud silla). Tempel asub kaunites aedades ja sisaldab palju Buddhat kujutavaid skulptuure ning koopiat Adam’s Peaki jalajäljest.
Matara kindlus ehitati portugallide poolt 1560. aastal ja ehitati 1640. aastal suuresti ümber hollandlaste poolt pärast Galle vallutamist. Kindlus koosneb suurest kivivallist ja asub poolsaarenik laguunide Nilwala jõe ja ookeani vahel.
Hollandi reformeeritud kirik Mataras ehitati Matara kindluses hollandlaste poolt 1706. aastal ning uuendati ulatuslikult 1767. aastal pärast kindluse taastamist 1762. aastal.
Star Fort asub Nilwala jõe läänepoolses, maismaa poole jäävas osas. Kindlus ehitati hollandlaste poolt pärast Matara ülestõusu 1761. aastal, et kaitsta peamist kindlust jõe rünnakute eest. Unikaalse tähekujulise kindluse ehitus lõpetati 1765. aastal.
Vana Nupe turg ehitati 1784. aastal hollandlaste poolt umbes 3,2 km kaugusel Matara kindlusest.
St. Mary’s Church asub Beach Roadil. Värava kuupäev (1769) viitab rekonstrueerimisele pärast Matara ülestõusu 1762. aastal.
