Jaffna ringkond
Jaffna piirkond Jaffna piirkond on üks Sri Lanka 25 piirkonnast, mis on riigi teise taseme haldusjaotus. Piirkonda juhib piirkondlik sekretariaat, mida juhib piirkondlik sekretär (varem tuntud kui valitsuse esindaja), kelle määrab Sri Lanka keskvalitsus Sri Lankast. Piirkonna pealinn on Jaffna linn.
5. sajandist eKr kuni 13. sajandini pKr kuulus tänapäevane Jaffna piirkond erinevatesse kuningriikidesse, nagu Pandya, Chola, Pallava, Kalinga ja Rajarata. Jaffna piirkond kuulus hiljem prekoloniaalsesse Jaffna kuningriiki. Pärast seda kuulus piirkond Portugali, Hollandi ja Briti kontrolli alla. 1815. aastal said britid kogu Ceyloni üle kontrolli. Nad jagasid saare kolmeks etniliselt jaotatud haldusstruktuuriks: Madalmaade Sinhala, Kandy Sinhala ja Tamil. Jaffna piirkond kuulus tamili haldusse. 1833. aastal, vastavalt Colebrooke-Cameroni komisjoni soovitustele, liideti etniliselt jaotatud haldusstruktuurid ühtseks haldussüsteemiks, mis jagunes viieks geograafiliseks provintsiks. Jaffna piirkond, koos Mannar piirkonna ja Vanni piirkonnaga, moodustas uue Põhja provintsi. Kui Ceylon saavutas iseseisvuse, oli Jaffna üks kolmest piirkonnast, mis asus Põhja provintsis. Piirkonna osi viidi 1978. aastal, septembris, üle uuele Mullaitivu piirkonnale. Kilinochchi piirkond eraldati Jaffna piirkonna lõunaosast veebruaris 1984.
Jaffna piirkond asub Sri Lankas kõige põhjapoolsemal alal Põhja provintsis ja hõlmab enamikku Jaffna poolsaarest. Piirkonna pindala on 1 025 ruutkilomeetrit (396 ruutmiili). Geograafiliselt on piirkond jagatud neljaks alaks:
- Thenmarachchi või Thenmaradchi
- Vadamarachchi või Vadamaradchi
- Valikamam
- Jaffna saared
