Die Rathna-Ella-Wasserfälle im Dorf Rathna Ella in der Nähe von Hasalaka in Sri Lankas Zentralprovinz sind ein faszinierendes Naturwunder. Mit einer Höhe von 101 Metern gilt er als der 14. höchste Wasserfall des Landes. Der Name „Rathna Ella“ bedeutet „Feld der Edelsteine“ und spiegelt sowohl seine atemberaubende Schönheit als auch die Folklore wider, die mit den verborgenen Schätzen der Region verbunden ist.

Der Wasserfall entspringt dem Hasalaka Oya, einem Nebenfluss des Mahaweli-Flusses, und spielt eine wichtige Rolle für die lokale Bevölkerung, da er Wasser für die Bewässerung und den Reisanbau liefert. Rund 200 Bauern sind für ihren Lebensunterhalt auf sein Wasser angewiesen. Die umliegende Landschaft ist geprägt von üppigen Wäldern und einer vielfältigen Flora und Fauna und bietet Besuchern eine ruhige Umgebung.

Der Weg nach Rathna Ella führt über eine etwa 3 bis 4 Kilometer lange Wanderung durch Reisfelder, Dschungelpfade und kleine Bäche. Der Weg ist mittelschwer und bietet Einblicke in das ländliche Leben, terrassierte Reisfelder und Teeplantagen. Unterwegs können Wanderer Wildtieren wie Affen, Hirschen und verschiedenen Vogelarten begegnen, was das Trekkingerlebnis noch bereichert.

Obwohl der Wasserfall ein beliebtes Ziel für Naturliebhaber und Fotografen ist, wird Besuchern zur Vorsicht geraten. Schwimmen in der Nähe des Wasserfalls kann aufgrund des tiefen Wassers und der starken Unterströmungen gefährlich sein, insbesondere während der Regenzeit. Die beste Reisezeit sind die Trockenmonate von Dezember bis März oder Juni bis September , wenn der Weg sicherer und das Wetter angenehmer ist.
