Königreich Polonnaruwa

Polonnaruwa , auch Pulathisipura genannt und in der Antike als Vijayarajapura bekannt, ist die Hauptstadt des Bezirks Polonnaruwa in der Nord-Zentralprovinz in Sri Lanka . Die moderne Stadt Polonnaruwa ist auch als Neustadt bekannt, und der andere Teil von Polonnaruwa ist nach wie vor die königliche antike Stadt des Königreichs Polonnaruwa .

Polonnaruwa , das zweitälteste Königreich Sri Lankas , wurde ursprünglich als Militärstützpunkt des singhalesischen Königreichs gegründet. Nach der erfolgreichen Invasion der damaligen Hauptstadt Anuradhapura im 10. Jahrhundert durch die Chola-Dynastie wurde es in Jananathamangalam umbenannt. Die Ruinen erstrecken sich über ein ausgedehntes Gebiet, das sich etwa 4 km von Norden nach Süden erstreckt. Zu den zahlreichen Ruinen zählen die Zitadelle, der Stadtviereck, Gal Vihara (Singhalesisch: Steintempel) und Lanktilaka , Gal Pota (Singhalesisch: Steinbuch), die buddhistischen Schreine Menik und Rankoth Vihara , das Kloster Alahena Pirivena, Lankatilaka (Singhalesisch: Schmuck von Lanka), die Kiri Vehera Stupa und das buddhistische Schrein Tivanka-Patamaghara.
Westlich der antiken Stadt liegt ein Binnenmeer, das dem Parakrama Samudra (Singhalesisch: Meer von Parkramabahu) ähnelt. Es handelt sich um einen künstlichen See, der im 13. Jahrhundert angelegt und in den 1950er Jahren saniert wurde.
