Reswehera, also known as Sesseruwa Rajamaha Viharaya, is an ancient Buddhist temple located in the Dambulla–Habarana region of Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle. Steeped in history and religious significance, the temple is closely associated with the reign of King Dutugemunu (161–137 BCE), one of Sri Lanka’s most revered monarchs. According to historical tradition, Reswehera was built by the king during his campaign against King Elara, making it an important site linked to the unification of the island and the protection of Buddhism.

The temple is best known for its large seated Buddha statue, which bears a strong resemblance to the famous Buddha image at Ruwanwelisaya in Anuradhapura. Local belief holds that King Dutugemunu constructed Reswehera as a place of worship while traveling through the region, and that the statue was intended to mirror the sacred Anuradhapura image. This connection reinforces the temple’s importance as both a religious monument and a historical landmark from the early Anuradhapura period.

Reswehera Rajamaha Viharaya is also notable for its ancient cave complexes and archaeological remains. The rock caves, some of which still bear drip-ledges and Brahmi inscriptions, indicate that the site was used by Buddhist monks for meditation and residence over many centuries. These features reflect the broader tradition of cave monasteries in Sri Lanka, particularly in the Dry Zone, where natural rock formations were adapted into monastic dwellings and shrines.

Surrounded by a serene natural landscape, Reswehera continues to function as an active place of worship. Devotees visit the temple to observe religious practices, offer flowers, and engage in meditation, especially on Poya days and other significant Buddhist occasions. The peaceful environment, combined with its historical depth, makes Reswehera a meaningful destination for both pilgrims and visitors interested in Sri Lanka’s ancient heritage.
