Caesalpinia bonduc, widely known as grey nicker, fever nut, nicker bean, or knicker nut, is a robust scrambling liana found across tropical regions worldwide. Belonging to the senna tribe Caesalpinieae within the legume family, it has earned a place in both ecological studies and traditional medicine systems, including Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic tradition. Despite its unassuming appearance along forest edges and coastal thickets, this plant carries a remarkable set of botanical characteristics and ethnobotanical applications.

What does Caesalpinia bonduc look like?

Caesalpinia bonduc is a vigorous liana capable of reaching 6 m (20 ft) or more in length, using its recurved stem spines to scramble over surrounding vegetation. The stems and rachises are armed with scattered curved prickles that help anchor the plant as it climbs.

The leaves are large and bi-pinnate, growing up to 40 cm (16 in) long. Each leaf carries four to eleven pairs of pinnae, themselves 5–20 cm (2–8 in) long, with five to ten pairs of pinnules per pinna. Individual pinnules are 15–40 mm (0.6–1.6 in) long, elliptic to ovate in shape, with acute tips and smooth margins.

Flowers are arranged in axillary racemes, often branched and covered in short hairs, reaching up to 15 cm (6 in) in length. The petals are yellow, around 10 mm (0.4 in) long, occasionally marked with a faint orange spot near the base of the keel petal. Jointed pedicels hold each flower at up to 6 mm (0.2 in) long, and the sepals are noticeably shorter than the petals.

How does Caesalpinia bonduc disperse its seeds?

After flowering, the plant produces large, flattish, spiny green pods — typically around 9 by 4 cm (4 by 2 in) — that turn brown as they mature. Each pod contains one or usually two glossy, rounded, grey seeds approximately 2 cm (0.8 in) in diameter. These seeds, commonly called nickernuts, are exceptionally buoyant and durable, enabling them to survive long journeys on ocean currents.

  • Bark and leaves: Used in decoctions aimed at lowering fevers and managing inflammatory conditions.
  • Seed oil: An oil extracted from the seeds has applications in cosmetic preparations and has been used traditionally to treat ear discharges.
  • Other applications: Traditional texts note its use in managing conditions associated with piles, paralysis, coughs, and certain skin complaints including pimples.

Caesalpinia bonduc belongs to the family Fabaceae (legumes), subfamily Caesalpinioideae, and the tribe Caesalpinieae. The genus Caesalpinia is named after the Italian botanist Andrea Cesalpino. The species epithet bonduc derives from the Arabic word for hazelnut, a reference to the rounded, hard seeds.

Synonyms recorded in botanical literature include Caesalpinia crista and Guilandina bonduc, the latter reflecting an earlier classification. Modern molecular phylogenetics has largely consolidated these under C. bonduc, though regional floras sometimes still list alternate names.
