2025 Lanka Premier League (LPL)

The 2025 Lanka Premier League (LPL) is set to be one of the most exciting T20 cricket tournaments in Sri Lanka. As the country’s premier franchise based cricket league, it brings together top local and international talent, thrilling fans with fast paced matches, high profile players, and competitive team rivalries. Over the years, the LPL has grown in stature, becoming a key fixture in the global T20 calendar.

Overview & Schedule

Format & Structure

  • There are going to be five franchises/teams competing.
  • All teams will face each other twice in the league phase in a double round-robin format.
  • After the league stage, the top four teams progress to the playoffs:
    • Qualifier 1: 1st vs 2nd ? winner goes to final
    • Eliminator: 3rd vs 4th ? loser out, winner goes to Qualifier 2
    • Qualifier 2: loser of Qualifier 1 vs winner of Eliminator ? this match decides the second finalist
  • Total matches: 24 (20 in league stage + 4 playoff matches).

New Developments & Key Changes

  • For the first time, Indian cricketers are expected to play in the LPL in 2025, raising the tournament’s profile.
  • Two franchises, Jaffna Kings and Colombo Strikers were terminated by Sri Lanka Cricket due to “failure to fulfill contractual obligations.”
  • As a result, none of the existing teams have owners that pre-date 2024.
  • There is discussion about possibly expanding to a sixth team, though that has not been confirmed yet.

Strategic Purpose

  • Shifting the LPL to late in the year (November to December) aligns the tournament with the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, giving players match practice in similar conditions.
  • Organisers are also making efforts to make pitches more batting friendly in some venues to enhance entertainment value.
