Polonnaruwa City
Polonnaruwa, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Sri Lanka, was the country's medieval capital (11th-13th century). Renowned for its well-preserved ruins, including the iconic Gal Vihara statues, it showcases impressive architecture, reflecting the grandeur of the ancient Sinhalese civilization.

ポロンナルワに行ったことがある人なら、それがどれほど忙しいかわかるでしょう。たくさんの遺跡が所狭しと並んでいます。遺跡を見るために入場券を購入するとき、通常、見るべきものをすべて見たいという誘惑に駆られますが、実際にはこれは愚かなことです。これまでの訪問の多くで、私たちは同じ罪を犯しました。なぜなら、古代人の素晴らしさを見て、想像し、深く飲まないことは確かに罪だからです。暑い日差しの中、私たちは荒廃した建物から別の建物へと息を切らせながら喉の渇きを潤すのに時間を費やし、一日の終わりにはゆっくりとホテルに戻ってくつろぎました。
しかし、今回はやり方を変えて、ポロンナルワを訪れたとき、多くの遺跡群のうちの 1 つだけを訪れ、研究し、リラックスすることに決めました。そこで、休日の昼食(食べ過ぎにはご注意をという意味です)、午後のシエスタ(贅沢)と美味しいお茶(モーニングコール)をとった後、午後5時頃にアラハナ・ピリヴェナ修道院へ向かいました。
アラハナ ピリヴェナは、パラクラマバフ 1 世 (1153 ~ 1186 年) によって設立された偉大な修道院複合施設で、火葬場に建てられたと言われており、そのためアラハナ ピリヴェナという名前が付けられました。 この修道院は、ゴパラ パバタのような大小の岩の露頭、曲がりくねった小川、池、公園のあるのどかな環境のテラスに配置されており、その面積は 80 ヘクタール以上に及んでいたと言われています。
考古学者は、修道院が小さな入口戸口を備えた小さな境界壁で区切られた多くの個別のユニットで構成されていたことを発見しました。各ユニットには独自の住居があり、そのうちのいくつかは修道士のための共同浴場や食堂などの施設を共有していたようです。
アラハナ ピリヴェーナの敷地の最も高いテラスには、修道院に住む修道士たちの支部の家であったバッダシマ パサダとして知られる記念碑的なレンガ造りの建物の遺跡が立っています。 パラクラマバフ王の時代には、僧侶たちは満月と新月の日に隔週で中央の高台に住職の僧侶とともにここに集まり、ヴィナヤ、つまり僧侶の規律の規則を暗誦したと言われています。 シマまたはチャプターハウスの境界を示す建物の外側の短い石の柱は、楽しいデザインであり、重要な特徴です。
このチャプターハウスの東側、低層テラスにはクダ ガル ヴィハーラとして知られる洞窟があり、そこには 3 つの小さな石仏坐像があります。ランカティレイク巡礼は、名前が示すようにランカの美しいスポットであり、最も印象的です。運が良ければ、ゲディゲ建築の中で最大のこの巨大なレンガ造りの建物の後ろに沈む夕日を見ることができれば、これはまさに当てはまります。洞窟内には、高さ 41 フィートの巨大な仏陀の立像の遺跡があります。

Polonnaruwa is the 2nd largest city in north central province in Sri Lanka. The ancient city of Polonnaruwa has been declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO Polonnaruwa has a great history of conquest and struggle behind it and rightfully forms the third element in the Cultural Triangle.
