Polonnaruwa City
Polonnaruwa, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Sri Lanka, was the country's medieval capital (11th-13th century). Renowned for its well-preserved ruins, including the iconic Gal Vihara statues, it showcases impressive architecture, reflecting the grandeur of the ancient Sinhalese civilization.

Polonnaruwa, también conocida como Pulathisipura y llamada Vijayarajapura en la antigüedad, es la ciudad principal del Distrito de Polonnaruwa en la Provincia Centro-Norte, Sri Lanka. La ciudad moderna de Polonnaruwa también es conocida como “Ciudad Nueva”, mientras que la otra parte de Polonnaruwa permanece como la antigua ciudad real del Reino de Polonnaruwa.

Las ruinas están agrupadas en un área extensa que se extiende aproximadamente 4 km de norte a sur. Entre la multitud de ruinas se encuentran la Ciudadela, el Cuadrángulo, Gal Vihara (en cingalés: templo de piedra) y Lankatilaka, Gal Potha (en cingalés: libro de piedra), los santuarios budistas Menik y Rankoth Vihara, el monasterio Alahena Pirivena, Lankatilaka (en cingalés: Adorno de Lanka), la estupa Kiri Vehera, la casa de imágenes Tivanka-patamaghara (santuario budista), todos son atractivos imprescindibles.
Al oeste de la ciudad antigua se encuentra el Parakrama Samudra (en cingalés: mar de Parakramabahu), un lago artificial construido en el siglo XIII y rehabilitado en la década de 1950.

About Polonnaruwa District
Polonnaruwa is the 2nd largest city in north central province in Sri Lanka. The ancient city of Polonnaruwa has been declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO Polonnaruwa has a great history of conquest and struggle behind it and rightfully forms the third element in the Cultural Triangle.
