Polonnaruwa City
Polonnaruwa, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Sri Lanka, was the country's medieval capital (11th-13th century). Renowned for its well-preserved ruins, including the iconic Gal Vihara statues, it showcases impressive architecture, reflecting the grandeur of the ancient Sinhalese civilization.

Polonnaruwa, også kaldet Pulathisipura og kendt som Vijayarajapura i oldtiden, er hovedbyen i Polonnaruwa-distriktet i Nordlige Centrale Provins, Sri Lanka. Den moderne by Polonnaruwa er også kendt som “New Town”, mens den anden del af Polonnaruwa forbliver som den kongelige gamle by i Kongeriget Polonnaruwa.
Det næstældste af alle Sri Lankas kongeriger, Polonnaruwa, blev først etableret som en militærpost af det singalesiske kongerige. Det blev omdøbt til Jananathamangalam af Chola-dynastiet efter deres vellykkede invasion af landets daværende hovedstad, Anuradhapura, i det 10. århundrede. Den gamle by Polonnaruwa er blevet erklæret et UNESCO-verdensarvssted.
Polonnaruwa Gamle By
Polonnaruwa Gamle By er stedet, hvor de velbevarede ruiner af den gamle by Polonnaruwa, et verdensarvssted, ligger. Ruinerne er spredt over et stort område, som strækker sig ca. 4 km fra nord til syd. Blandt de mange ruiner er Citadellet, Kvadranglen, Gal Vihara (singalesisk: stentempel) og Lankatilaka, Gal Potha (singalesisk: stenbog), Menik og Rankoth vihara buddhistiske helligdomme, Alahena Pirivena-klosteret, Lankatilaka (singalesisk: Lankas pryd), Kiri Vehera-stupaen, Tivanka-patamaghara billedhus (buddhistisk helligdom), som alle er seværdigheder, man bør besøge.
Vest for den gamle by ligger det indlands-havlignende Parakrama Samudra (singalesisk: Parakramabahu-havet), en kunstig sø bygget i det 13. århundrede og restaureret i 1950’erne.

Polonnaruwa Museum er det ideelle udgangspunkt for en tur i den gamle by Polonnaruwa: den imponerende præsentation på museet giver en rigdom af viden, der hjælper med at forstå de mange ruiner – bevarede, restaurerede og rekonstruerede – samt det rehabiliterede kunstvandingsnetværk bestående af kunstige regnvandsreservoirer og kanaler, der fordeler vand til landbrugsområdet i Polonnaruwa.

About Polonnaruwa District
Polonnaruwa is the 2nd largest city in north central province in Sri Lanka. The ancient city of Polonnaruwa has been declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO Polonnaruwa has a great history of conquest and struggle behind it and rightfully forms the third element in the Cultural Triangle. Located about 140 kms north east from Kandy,Polonnaruwa offers hours of endless pleasure for history and culture lovers, as there are numerous sights of significance.
