Invite the ancient healing traditions and vibrant artistry of Sri Lanka into your home with the Pith Sanniya Mask. This striking piece is one of the legendary 18 Sanni (disease) masks used in the Daha Ata Sanniya, a traditional Sinhalese exorcism ritual performed to ward off ailments and restore spiritual balance.

The Legend of Pith Sanniya

In Sri Lankan folklore, the Pith Sanniya demon is believed to be the bringer of bilious diseases—ailments caused by an imbalance of bile in the body, such as jaundice. To represent this, the mask is traditionally finished in vibrant yellow or orange hues, symbolizing the physical symptoms of the illness.

By capturing the demon’s likeness in wood, ancient healers believed they could summon, appease, and ultimately banish the spirit. Today, this mask serves as a powerful symbol of the battle between sickness and health.

Masterful Craftsmanship

Each mask is a labor of love, handcrafted by skilled artisans in Ambalangoda, the world-renowned heart of Sri Lankan mask carving.

  • Authentic Material: Carved from Goda Kaduru (Strychnine tree) wood. This local timber is lightweight, durable, and allows for intricate detailing.
  • Hand-Painted Artistry: Uses a palette of bold, traditional pigments to highlight the demon's fiery eyes and expressive features.
  • Unique Heritage Piece: Because every mask is carved and painted by hand, no two pieces are exactly alike.
