Mangrove Kayaking from Bolgoda Lake

Experience:

Bolgoda Lake sits about 45 minutes from Colombo, within the Bolgoda Environmental Protection Area, and it is quiet water: a wide open lake that narrows into shaded mangrove channels and small wooded islands. The trip begins on land with a basic kayak lesson and a safety briefing, after which the instructors take you out. The guides are native to the area and paddle with you throughout, pointing out what you would otherwise glide straight past.

After about an hour on the open water you turn into the mangrove channels, where the branches close overhead into a low green tunnel. Do not mistake the stillness for emptiness — the mangroves are abuzz with wildlife, and this is where most of it is. For bird-watching enthusiasts, you will be able to spot Kingfishers, Eagles, Herons, Egrets, and many more. Early morning and late afternoon are the calmest hours on the lake, and the best light on it.
