The White-faced Starling (Sturnia albifrontata, Layard, 1854) is one of Sri Lanka's most distinctive endemic birds, quietly commanding attention in the mid-elevation forests of the island's southwest and south. Often overlooked by casual visitors, it rewards patient birdwatchers with graceful movement through the forest canopy and a subtle elegance that sets it apart from its more conspicuous relatives.

What does the White-faced Starling look like?

Adult males reach around 21.6 cm in length, making them a medium-sized starling by regional standards. Females are slightly smaller but otherwise similar in plumage — an unusual trait among starlings, where sexual dimorphism is common. The defining feature is the white face, which develops gradually during the bird's first year of life. Juveniles carry a brown iris with a faint white outer ring; as they mature, the white facial coloration becomes more pronounced. Both sexes look alike in juveniles and adults, which can make age estimation at a distance the main identification challenge.

Where does the White-faced Starling live in Sri Lanka?

This species occupies a relatively narrow altitudinal band, typically between 300 and 1,200 metres above sea level. It is almost exclusively found in the undisturbed natural forests along the slopes of the southwestern and southern hill ranges. Habitat integrity is critical: White-faced Starlings are rarely recorded in degraded or fragmented forest and are essentially absent from plantations, gardens, or open countryside.

The Sinharaja Forest Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Sabaragamuwa and Southern provinces, is among the most reliable locations for encountering this species. The Knuckles Mountain Range and mid-elevation patches of the Peak Wilderness Sanctuary also fall within its known range. Birdwatchers exploring the Horton Plains National Park area may find it on forested approach roads, though the park's upper elevations tend to be above the species' preferred range.

What does the White-faced Starling eat?

The diet consists primarily of fruits and insects. Foraging behaviour is notably arboreal — the species is almost never observed on the ground, moving instead along branches with a deliberate, stealthy gait that belies the speed at which it can close in on prey or a fruiting cluster. This canopy-focused lifestyle makes it well adapted to life in tall, closed-canopy forest where the understorey is relatively open.

White-faced Starlings regularly join mixed-species feeding flocks, an adaptive strategy that improves foraging efficiency and offers some protection from predators. Sharing the canopy with other insectivores and frugivores, they contribute to — and benefit from — the activity of larger assemblages moving through the forest.

How does the White-faced Starling behave in the wild?

The species is strictly arboreal in habit, and encounters on or near the forest floor are exceptional enough to note. Vocal activity is relatively modest: the call is a short, sharp chirp heard most consistently when the birds are moving in small groups. Larger congregations are unusual; the species tends to occur in pairs or loose parties rather than the dense roost flocks typical of some Asian starlings.

When alarmed or disturbed, White-faced Starlings tend to move quietly higher into the canopy rather than flushing noisily — a trait that can frustrate birdwatchers hoping for extended views, but which also speaks to how well-integrated the species is in its forest environment.

What is known about the breeding habits of the White-faced Starling?

Until quite recently, the nesting behaviour of this species was almost entirely undocumented. Confirmed records are still scarce. What is now established is that White-faced Starlings nest in natural tree cavities at relatively high elevations within their range. The eggs are pale blue and measure approximately 25 x 20 mm. The only nest examined to date contained two eggs, suggesting a small clutch size, though more data are needed before firm conclusions can be drawn about typical brood size or nesting season.

The scarcity of breeding records reflects both the species' preference for intact, high-canopy forest — which is difficult terrain for systematic nest searching — and the relatively limited ornithological fieldwork targeting this species specifically.

Is the White-faced Starling endangered?

As an endemic species confined to a narrow habitat type within a limited geographic range, the White-faced Starling is inherently vulnerable to deforestation and habitat degradation. Sri Lanka has lost a significant proportion of its original lowland and mid-elevation wet-zone forest, and the species' dependence on undisturbed natural forest means that remaining patches of intact habitat — particularly those within protected areas — are critical to its long-term survival. The species is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, underlining the importance of forest conservation in Sri Lanka's southwestern hills.

When is the best time to spot White-faced Starlings?

The species is resident year-round rather than migratory, so timing a visit around a specific season is less critical than choosing the right habitat. Early mornings, when mixed-species flocks are most active, offer the best window for sightings. The drier inter-monsoon periods — roughly January to March and July to August — can make forest trails more accessible and canopy birds easier to locate by ear. The months of heavy southwest monsoon (typically May to July in the wet zone) bring dense cloud and rain that can suppress bird activity and make forest access difficult.

Tips for birdwatchers hoping to see this species

  • Prioritise primary or old-growth forest over secondary growth and edge habitats.
  • Listen for the short chirp calls of mixed feeding flocks moving through the canopy — the White-faced Starling is often embedded within these groups.
