About this experience
A Wasgamuwa National Park safari carries you into a dry tropical forest setting alongside the Mahaweli, Sri Lanka's longest river, in search of the island's majestic elephants. It is a place to breathe in the refreshing air of the pristine wild and listen to the symphony of crickets and birdsong, with sweeping views across the park's landscape — best visited between November and May, when large herds of elephants are most likely.
Beyond the elephants, the park shelters a diverse cast of mammals including leopard, sloth bear, purple-faced langur monkey, wild boar, sambar and spotted deer, and water buffalo. Water pools scattered throughout are home to water monitors, crocodiles, pythons and aquatic birds, offering clear sightings and fine photography. It makes a natural addition for anyone exploring the ancient cities of Polonnaruwa and Dambulla.
