About this experience

This four-day private tour links three very different sides of Sri Lanka: the elephant sanctuary at Pinnawala, the hill capital of Kandy with its ancient Buddhist links to Mahiyanganaya, and the commercial bustle of Colombo. It is a compact introduction for travellers with limited time who still want culture, wildlife and city life in one trip.

Highlights include a visit to the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, an evening of Kandyan dance and craft demonstrations, and a day trip to Mahiyangana, said to be the first place in Sri Lanka visited by the Lord Buddha, with its old stupa and museum of archaeological finds. The tour closes in Colombo, where travellers can explore colonial-era landmarks, shopping streets and the city's nightlife before departure.

Throughout, you are driven by a Lakpura chauffeur guide in an air-conditioned vehicle, with the route running from the airport through Kandy and Mahiyanganaya to Colombo and back to the airport on departure.

1 Kandy

Day 1 — Airport → Pinnawala → Kandy

On arrival at Colombo International Airport, a Lakpura chauffeur guide meets you and drives you to Kandy, stopping en route at the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage. In the evening there is a chance to see traditional crafts and a Kandyan cultural show before returning to the hotel.

Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage

This orphanage near Pinnawala village in Sabaragamuwa province cares for young elephants displaced or lost from their natural habitat. With around 70 elephants, it is home to the largest captive herd of elephants in the world, giving visitors a close encounter with these animals.

Arts and Crafts Tour

Towards evening, visit workshops showing traditional Kandyan arts such as gem crafting, woodcarving and batik making.

Kandyan Cultural Show

This hour-long show presents some of Sri Lanka's best-known performance traditions, including fire dancers, sword dancers and Kandyan dancers performing to drumming.

2 Kandy

Day 2 — Kandy → Mahiyanganaya → Kandy

After breakfast, travel from Kandy to Mahiyanganaya for a day exploring one of the island's oldest sacred sites, then return to Kandy for the night.

Mahiyangana Raja Maha Vihara

This old stupa, believed to have been visited by the Lord Buddha on his first visit to Sri Lanka, has a history going back more than two thousand years. Local legends surrounding the temple form part of the visit.

Mahiyangana Museum

The museum displays artefacts unearthed at the Mahiyangana archaeological site, giving further context to the area's long history.

3 Colombo

Day 3 — Kandy → Colombo

After breakfast, drive to Colombo and check in to your hotel, then spend the evening exploring Sri Lanka's commercial capital.

Colombo City Tour

Visit historic landmarks such as the Old Lighthouse, the Old Parliament, Galle Face Hotel, Galle Face Green, Gangarama Temple and the National Museum. The evening also allows time for shopping around Independence Square or the Race Course, including boutique shops and designer stores, as well as experiencing Colombo's nightlife.

4 Airport

Day 4 — Colombo → Airport

After breakfast, check out from the hotel and transfer to the airport for departure.

Is this a private tour?

Yes. The tour is private to your group: your own air-conditioned vehicle and an English-speaking chauffeur guide for all 4 days, with no other travellers joining.

Where does the tour start and end?

Day 1 starts at Colombo airport (CMB) and day 4 ends at Colombo airport (CMB). Every stop in between is reached by road in the same vehicle, so there is no other transport to arrange.

Are hotels included?

The base price covers the vehicle and chauffeur guide. In the booking box you can add hotels for all 3 nights at Budget (3★), Standard (4★) or Luxury (5★ and boutique) level, on half board. Hotels we hold contracts with for your dates are named in the price; for any other night our team books a hotel of the same class after you pay.

What vehicle will we travel in?

It depends on your group: a car for 1–2 guests, a van for 3–5, a large van for 6–8 and a bus for 9–15. Choose the number of guests in the booking box and the price updates to match.

Are entrance fees included?

Not in the base price. Set Tickets to Included in the booking box to add the entrance fees and safari jeeps for the sights on this itinerary; the booking box lists exactly which ones are covered.

Can we have a national guide?

Yes. A chauffeur guide is always included, and you can add a government-licensed national guide who travels with you for the whole tour. Choose it under Guide in the booking box; the vehicle is sized for the extra seat.

Can we change the itinerary or the dates?
