Date & Time

Climb aboard the Calypso Tourist Train and see Sri Lanka's celebrated hill country the way it was meant to be seen — slowly, from a panoramic carriage, with the tea-covered highlands of Uva Province drifting past your window. The Calypso is a dedicated tourist service built around the scenery rather than the schedule, running the spectacular hill-country line between Badulla and Demodara (Train No. 1232, returning as No. 1234).

What the experience is like

This is a journey to savour, not simply a way to get from A to B. Wide windows frame a constantly changing view as lush tea estates, forested ridges, tumbling waterfalls and mist-wrapped mountains unfold on both sides of the line. Rolling at a gentle, unhurried pace through tunnels and cuttings, the train gives you time to take it all in — and plenty of chances for photographs.

The route & scenery

The Calypso winds along one of the world's most beautiful railway stretches. Highlights include the iconic Nine Arches Bridge near Demodara — a soaring colonial-era viaduct set against emerald hillsides — the ingenious Demodara Loop, hill-country waterfalls, terraced tea gardens and the postcard scenery around Ella.

Seating

  • First Class — an air-conditioned saloon with numbered seats; as the cabin is sealed for air-conditioning, windows do not open.
  • Second Class — a non-air-conditioned saloon with windows that open and fans for ventilation, for those who want the breeze and unobstructed photos.

Good to know

Tickets for the Calypso Tourist Train are issued only at the railway station and cannot be booked or purchased online through this platform. Please arrange your tickets in person at the station on the day of travel. Departure times are set by Sri Lanka Railways and can change seasonally — confirm the current timetable locally before you travel.
