Prowincja Zachodnia
Najbardziej zaludniona prowincja Sri Lanki, Prowincja Zachodnia, o powierzchni 3 593 km², jest siedzibą ustawodawczej stolicy kraju, Sri Jayewardenepura. Jest także domem dla komercyjnego centrum kraju, Colombo.
Praktycznie wszystkie wiodące instytucje edukacyjne na wyspie znajdują się w prowincji zachodniej. Uniwersytety w tej prowincji obejmują Uniwersytet Colombo, Uniwersytet Sri Jayewardenepura, Uniwersytet Kelaniya, Otwarty Uniwersytet Sri Lanki, Sir John Kotelawala Defence University, Uniwersytet Moratuwa oraz Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology. Prowincja Zachodnia ma również największą liczbę szkół w kraju.
Prowincja zachodnia składa się z trzech dystryktów: Colombo, Gampaha i Kalutara.
Dystrykt Colombo ma powierzchnię 642 km², a jego głównym miastem jest Colombo. Inne popularne i ważne miasta w tym dystrykcie to Dehiwala, Nugegoda, Maharagama, Homagama, Avissawella i Moratuwa. Kotte Urban Development Council, utworzona w latach 30. XX wieku z nowoczesnym budynkiem w Rajagiriya, została zastąpiona przez Kotte Urban Council, z którego dużą część usunięto i przypisano do Colombo Municipal Council, dzielnica Borella, podczas gdy Battaramulla Urban Council została rozwiązana, a mała część Battaramulla przypisana do Kotte Urban Council. Kotte Urban Council w 1997 roku stała się Sri Jayawardanapura Kotte Municipal Council.
Mount Lavinia to nowo utworzone miasto, położone bezpośrednio na południe od Colombo. Jest wynikiem połączenia niektórych kluczowych przedmieść miejskich i społeczności w celach administracyjnych. Centrum obejmuje Dehiwala oraz nadmorski kurort Mount Lavinia. Znajdują się tu także Narodowe Ogrody Zoologiczne Sri Lanki, które są jednymi z największych w Azji. Dehiwala i Mount Lavinia leżą bezpośrednio na południe od Wellawatte wzdłuż arterii Galle Road, biegnącej wzdłuż wybrzeża na południu kraju. Jest to jeden z najbardziej liberalnych regionów Sri Lanki i gospodarzem corocznego festiwalu latawców Rainbow Kite Festival.
Dystrykt Gampaha ma powierzchnię 1 386,6 km², a jego głównym miastem jest Gampaha. Inne popularne i ważne miasta to Nittambuwa, Wattala, Ja-ela, Negombo i Veyangoda.
Gampaha to miasto miejskie położone na północ od Colombo, oddzielone od niego rzeką Kelani. Nazwa „Gampaha” w języku syngaleskim oznacza „Pięć Wsi”. Miasto znajduje się w centrum dystryktu Gampaha, około 4 km od Miriswatta przy Colombo-Kandy Road. Otoczone jest przez miasta Yakkala, Miriswatta, Weliweriya, Udugampola i Ja-Ela.
W ostatnich latach Gampaha przeszła szybki rozwój; zbudowano wiele nowych kompleksów handlowych, dróg, mostów i estakad. Za większość programów rozwojowych w tym obszarze odpowiadały instytucje prywatne.
Innym dystryktem prowincji zachodniej jest Kalutara, o powierzchni 1 606 km², którego głównym miastem jest Kalutara. Inne ważne i popularne miasta w tym dystrykcie to Panadura, Beruwala, Aluthgama, Horana i Matugama.
Kalutara jest miastem kurortowym, położonym około 40 km na południe od Colombo.

Western ProvinceThe most densely populated province of Sri Lanka, the Western Province which is 3,593 km2 in extent is home to the country’s legislative capital Sri Jayewardenepura. It is also home to the country’s commercial hub, Colombo.

Central ProvinceThe Central Province is located in the central hills of Sri Lanka comprising of three administrative districts: Kandy, Matale and Nuwara-Eliya. The land area of the province is 5,575 km2 which is 8.6% of the total land area of Sri Lanka.

Southern ProvinceThe Southern Province of Sri Lanka is a small geographic area consisting of three districts: Galle, Matara and Hambantota. Farming and fishing are the main sources of income for the vast majority of the people in this region.

Uva ProvinceThe Uva Province consists of two districts: Badulla and Moneragala while the capital of the province is Badulla. Uva is bordered by the Eastern, Southern and Central provinces.

Sabaragamuwa ProvinceSabaragamuwa is yet another province of Sri Lanka, located in the south-central region of the island and is comprised of two administrative districts: Ratnapura and Kegalle.

North Western ProvinceNorth Western Province is comprised of two administrative districts viz. Kurunegala and Puttalam. The provincial capital is Kurunegala that has a population of 28,571. The province is well known for its coconut plantations.

Northern ProvinceThe Northern Province is located in the north of Sri Lanka just 35 km from India. It has a land area of 8,884 km’. The province is surrounded by the Gulf of Mannar and Palk Bay to the west, Palk Strait to the north west, the Bay of Bengal to the north and east and the Eastern, North Central and North Western provinces to the south.

Eastern ProvinceAnother province of Sri Lanka mostly known for its golden beaches and the natural harbour, the Eastern Province which is 9,996 km2 in extent consists of three administrative districts namely Trincomalee, Batticaloa and Ampara.
