Jetwing Lighthouse is Geoffrey Bawa's 85-room hotel on a rocky hillock above the Indian Ocean at Dadella, on the coast road just outside Galle. Listed with us as Jetwing Lighthouse Club, it is one of Geoffrey Bawa's best-known coastal buildings, finished with work by the artists Laki Senanayake and Ena de Silva, and every room looks towards the sea or the coastal gardens.
Every room and suite has air conditioning, a rain shower, a 40-inch satellite television, a mini-bar, free Wi-Fi and a tea and coffee tray with a cafetière. The names below are the ones you will see when you choose a room.
The hotel has six restaurants and bars. The Cardamom Café is open 24 hours, with an à la carte menu and buffets on selected days, and opens on to The Verandah for meals in the sea breeze. The Cinnamon Room is the dinner-only fine-dining restaurant, Pan Asian at Nihal's serves Far Eastern dishes in honour of a former executive chef, and the Anchor Bar by the pool does wood-fired pizzas and craft beers. The Coats of Arms Bar stays open until midnight. Jetwing also arranges signature dining: a barbecue on the rocky shore, dinner in a private gazebo, or a meal in the wine cellar or in your room.
There are two swimming pools and a children's pool, a fully equipped gym, a floodlit tennis court, a pool table and a Balinese-style spa with a steam room, a plunge pool and Ayurvedic and tropical treatments. Yoga can be arranged on request. The resident naturalist, Anoma, leads an hour-long Sea Shore Trail over the sandstone reef and rock pools below the hotel, where hermit crabs, sea urchins and reef fish live, and the Cetacean Information Centre explains the whales and dolphins of the south coast. Butler service is offered to every guest, and babysitting and a doctor on call are available at extra charge.
The Galle Fort, the UNESCO-listed 17th-century Dutch fortress, is about 2.5 kilometres away in a straight line, with its lanes of shops and cafés and the National Maritime Museum inside the walls. Across the bay, the Japanese Peace Pagoda on Rumassala hill looks down over Unawatuna Beach. North along the coast at Ambalangoda you can watch mask-carving at the mask museum and workshop. With the naturalist you can also take a boat safari on the Mahamodara River, or go whale watching for blue whales and dolphins off Mirissa.
Yes. Galle station, the main stop on the Coast Line, is about 2.3 kilometres away in a straight line, close to the fort. The hotel stands on the coast road, so a short taxi or tuk-tuk ride brings you to the door.
Galle is about 120 kilometres from Colombo. Jetwing gives three to four hours for the coastal drive, or a good deal less on the Southern Expressway. From Bandaranaike International Airport, north of Colombo, the hotel is about 131 kilometres in a straight line, so allow extra time to get round the city. The simplest way to arrive is a private transfer from Colombo airport to Jetwing Lighthouse, which takes you all the way to the door.
It suits travellers who care about architecture and want a polished, full-service hotel close to Galle Fort, with sea views, several restaurants and plenty of space to unwind. Families are well looked after with the children's pool and babysitting, and couples will find the suites and Spa Wing rooms especially private.
