ハンバントタは、スリランカ南東部の沿岸地域にある田舎町である。スリランカ南部州ハンバントタ郡の州都でもある。コロンボから約240キロ離れたハンバントタは、大規模なインフラ整備が進み、戦略的な港湾と商業の中心地へと変貌を遂げつつある。ブンダラ国立公園はハンバントタの東20キロに位置し、ウィーラウィラ聖域は少し離れたところにある。ルフナ国立公園やカタラガマ寺院もこの町から簡単にアクセスできる観光スポットだ。
南部州について


スリランカ南部州は、ゴール県、マタラ県、ハンバントタ県からなる小さな地域である。ヤーラ国立公園とウダワラウェ国立公園の野生動物保護区、聖地カタラガマ、古都ティッサマハラマ、キリンダ、ゴールなどが南部州の重要なランドマークである。(ガレは古都だが、ポルトガルの侵攻以前のものはほとんど残っていない)。ポルトガル統治時代には、ディックウェラ出身のアンダレとマタラ県デニピティヤ出身のガジャマン・ノナという2人の有名なシンハラ人詩人がいて、庶民をテーマにした詩を詠んでいた。
