In 17th century Ceylon, a kingdom besieged by Portuguese forces faces an internal threat as deadly as any external enemy. The King of Kandy schemes to steal the throne from his rightful heirs—the sons of Wimaladharmasuriya—and place his own son Rajasinha upon it instead. Historical figures including the notorious Dona Catherina, the Portuguese Captain-General Constantine de Saa, and the Dutch-born Disave Migomuve Rala converge in this tale of ambition, betrayal, and the struggle for power in a nation under siege.
