Voici quelques plantes médicinales ayurvédiques notables que l'on trouve au Sri Lanka
Smilax perfoliata
Smilax perfoliata is a species of flowering plant in the family Smilacaceae, commonly known as the Perfoliate Greenbrier or Greenbriar. It is native to North America, primarily found in the southeastern and eastern regions of the United States. This plant is part of the Smilax genus, which consists of climbing or sprawling vines, often known for their thorny stems.
Key Characteristics:
Appearance:
Smilax perfoliata is a woody vine or shrub with climbing or trailing stems that can reach lengths of up to 3 meters (about 10 feet). It has heart-shaped leaves that are often glossy and can appear leathery. The leaves are typically about 5-12 cm long and are perfoliate (a term that means the leaf stalks pass through the base of the leaf, creating a hole). This characteristic is where the plant gets its species name. The vines are usually green, but they may become somewhat reddish or purplish as they mature.
Flowers:
The plant produces small, greenish-white flowers that are arranged in clusters. These flowers are not particularly showy but have a pleasant fragrance. They are typically produced in late spring to early summer.
Berries/Fruit:
After flowering, Smilax perfoliata produces dark purple or black berries. These berries are often eaten by birds and other wildlife, helping to spread the plant.
Thorns:
Like many species in the Smilax genus, Smilax perfoliata has sharp thorns on its stems, which can make it challenging to handle or navigate through areas where the plant grows.
Habitat and Growth:
Habitat:
This plant thrives in a variety of habitats, including woodlands, thickets, roadsides, and disturbed areas, often in regions with moist, well-drained soil. It is typically found in areas with partial to full shade, although it can tolerate some sun.
Climate:
Smilax perfoliata is commonly found in temperate climates, particularly in the southeastern United States, from Virginia down to Florida and west to Texas.
Growth Habit:
As a climbing or sprawling vine, Smilax perfoliata uses other vegetation or structures for support. It is a hardy plant that can tolerate a range of soil conditions, from slightly acidic to neutral soils.
Uses:
Traditional Medicinal Uses:
Various species of Smilax, including Smilax perfoliata, have been used in traditional herbal medicine. In particular, the Smilax genus is sometimes known for its use in treating skin conditions, arthritis, and for its purported ability to boost energy levels. However, Smilax perfoliata itself is not as widely studied or used as other species like Smilax ornata (known as sarsaparilla) in herbal medicine.
Wildlife:
The berries of Smilax perfoliata are eaten by birds and small mammals, making the plant an important component of the ecosystem. Its thorny stems provide shelter and protection for various animals, including some birds and small mammals.
