Sri Lankan Elephant in Captivity

Approximately 15,000 Asian elephants exist in captivity worldwide, making up a quarter to a third of the entire surviving population of Elephas maximus. The vast majority of these captive elephants remain in their countries of origin, with the remainder housed in Western zoos and circuses. This work examines the scope and implications of elephant captivity in Sri Lanka and beyond.
