Traditional Rice
The rice cultivation has a long and parallel relationship with the country’s history and culture and Sri Lankan has practised an agriculture-based lifestyle for the past 3 millennia. According to the evidence collected through written history and archaeology, rice cultivation of the island goes back to the period of 900-600 BC.
Madathawalu: මඩතවාලු
Madathawalu ist eine sehr beliebte Sorte kurzkörnigen roten Reis, die traditionell in Sri Lanka angebaut wird. Die Pflanze entwickelt sich zu einer maximalen Höhe von 130 cm. Diese Pflanze kann innerhalb von 4 Monaten nach der Aussaat geerntet werden. Madathawalu trägt 20 bis 30 Halme pro Pflanze und gilt als eine der ertragreichsten traditionellen Reissorten in Sri Lanka. Der potenzielle Ertrag liegt bei etwa 110 Scheffel pro Acre und wird derzeit in ganz Sri Lanka angebaut. Diese Sorte soll sich gut als Bio-Pflanze eignen. Traditionell wird angenommen, dass sie das menschliche Immunsystem stärkt und zur Behandlung von Diabetes eingesetzt wird. Wissenschaftliche Studien haben Hinweise auf medizinische Eigenschaften ergeben, die bei der Behandlung von Diabetes und oxidativem Stress nützlich sind.
