Ampara Airport (ADP)
Ampara Airport, also known as Gal Oya Airport, is a domestic airport located in Ampara, in the Eastern Province of Sri Lanka. Initially established for military use, the airport has expanded its operations to include civil aviation, providing a vital link between Ampara and other parts of the island. The airport's IATA code is ADP, and it plays a significant role in the regional transportation network by facilitating easier access to this less developed but culturally rich and geographically diverse area.
The airport is strategically important for the development of the Eastern Province, serving not only as a gateway for tourists interested in exploring the natural beauty and historical sites of the region but also as a crucial infrastructure for economic development. The region is known for its picturesque landscapes, including beautiful beaches, national parks, and ancient heritage sites, making Ampara a potential hub for eco-tourism and cultural tourism in Sri Lanka.
Ampara Airport is relatively small compared to major international airports in Sri Lanka, with basic facilities to handle domestic flights and small aircraft. It features a runway that accommodates short take-off and landing aircraft, which are ideal for the domestic routes it serves. While the airport currently handles a limited number of scheduled flights, there are plans to expand its services and facilities to boost regional air travel and support the local economy.
Overall, Ampara Airport is poised to become an increasingly important part of Sri Lanka's domestic air travel network, enhancing connectivity and supporting the growth of the Eastern Province as a key destination for both domestic and international tourists.
