Udawalawe National Park is the place to go in Sri Lanka for a reliable, close sighting of wild elephants, and this guided safari puts you in an open-top 4x4 jeep with a driver who also works as your tracker through its grasslands and wetlands. The park sits in the lowland dry zone south of the Central Highlands, and its open, savanna-like terrain of grassland, scrub and riverine forest around the Udawalawe reservoir means animals are rarely out of sight for long. It was established in 1972 to protect the catchment of the Udawalawe reservoir and to give sanctuary to animals displaced by its construction, and today it is one of the country's most visited parks for exactly that reason.
The drive begins at the park's main entrance near the car park and moves first through savanna grassland, where elephants, spotted deer and other grassland animals are the main draw, before working toward the banks of the Udawalawe reservoir itself, with hills rising in the distance. Along the water's edge you may come across crocodiles resting on the banks or moving through the shallows, and birds of prey working the shoreline alongside wading species. Udawalawe holds a large resident elephant population, and herds are commonly seen coming down to the reservoir to drink and rest, often with calves among them.
This is a private safari: your jeep and guide work only with your own group, not combined with other travellers, and the vehicle carries a maximum of six passengers. A mineral water bottle per person is provided, along with an experienced driver who also acts as tracker throughout. Pickup and drop-off are included free of charge from any hotel within a five kilometre radius of the park gate; beyond that radius, transfers are not included and the tour instead begins and ends at the park entrance.
Park entrance tickets are included only under the jeep-with-tickets option; choosing jeep-only means tickets are arranged separately. Food, drinks, gratuities and personal expenses are not part of the booking. The safari depends on reasonable weather, and if conditions force a cancellation you will be offered another date or a full refund rather than losing the booking outright.
The experience is not wheelchair accessible and is not recommended for travellers with back problems, pregnancy, or serious heart conditions, though most other travellers are able to take part. Confirmation is issued at the time of booking, and the designated meeting point is the park gate itself, ready for the jeep to head out into Udawalawe's open country.
