காலி மாவட்டம் பற்றி
காலி என்பது இலங்கையின் தென்மேற்கு முனையில், கொழும்பிலிருந்து 119 கி.மீ தொலைவில் அமைந்துள்ள ஒரு நகரம். தெற்கு மற்றும் தென்கிழக்கு ஆசியாவில் ஐரோப்பியர்களால் கட்டப்பட்ட ஒரு கோட்டை நகரத்திற்கு காலி சிறந்த எடுத்துக்காட்டு, இது ஐரோப்பிய கட்டிடக்கலை பாணிகளுக்கும் தெற்காசிய மரபுகளுக்கும் இடையிலான தொடர்புகளைக் காட்டுகிறது. காலி கோட்டை ஒரு உலக பாரம்பரிய தளமாகும், மேலும் ஐரோப்பிய ஆக்கிரமிப்பாளர்களால் கட்டப்பட்ட ஆசியாவில் எஞ்சியிருக்கும் மிகப்பெரிய கோட்டையாகும். காலி என்பது இலங்கை தரத்தின்படி ஒரு குறிப்பிடத்தக்க நகரமாகும், மேலும் 91,000 மக்கள்தொகையைக் கொண்டுள்ளது, அவர்களில் பெரும்பாலோர் சிங்கள இனத்தைச் சேர்ந்தவர்கள். குறிப்பாக கோட்டைப் பகுதியில் ஒரு பெரிய இலங்கை மூர் சிறுபான்மையினரும் உள்ளனர், அவர்கள் பண்டைய காலி துறைமுகத்தில் குடியேறிய அரபு வணிகர்களிடமிருந்து வந்தவர்கள். தெற்கு மாகாணம் பற்றி இலங்கையின் தெற்கு மாகாணம் காலி, மாத்தறை மற்றும் ஹம்பாந்தோட்டை மாவட்டங்களைக் கொண்ட ஒரு சிறிய புவியியல் பகுதியாகும். இந்தப் பிராந்தியத்தின் பெரும்பான்மையான மக்களின் முக்கிய வருமான ஆதாரமாக விவசாயம் மற்றும் மீன்பிடித்தல் உள்ளது. தென் மாகாணத்தின் முக்கிய அடையாளங்களில் யால மற்றும் உடவலவே தேசிய பூங்காக்களின் வனவிலங்கு சரணாலயங்கள், கதிர்காம புனித நகரம் மற்றும் திஸ்ஸமஹாராம, கிரிந்த மற்றும் காலி ஆகிய பண்டைய நகரங்கள் அடங்கும். (காலி ஒரு பழங்கால நகரம் என்றாலும், போர்த்துகீசிய படையெடுப்பிற்கு முன்னர் இருந்த எதுவும் எஞ்சியிருக்கவில்லை.) போர்த்துகீசிய காலத்தில் திக்வெல்லவைச் சேர்ந்த அந்தாரே மற்றும் மாத்தறை மாவட்டத்தில் உள்ள டெனிபிட்டியவைச் சேர்ந்த கஜமான் நோனா என்ற இரண்டு பிரபலமான சிங்களக் கவிஞர்கள் இருந்தனர், அவர்கள் சாதாரண மனிதர்களைப் பற்றிய கவிதைகளை இயற்றினர்.
