About this experience

Wonder Island is a short three-day tour covering the central hill town of Kandy and the commercial capital, Colombo. Travelling by private vehicle with a chauffeur guide, you visit a spice garden, Kandyan craft workshops, the Temple of the Tooth Relic, a forest sanctuary, botanical gardens, and finish with a city and shopping tour of Colombo before departure.

The pace is relaxed, with one main region explored per day: Kandy for two days, then a final day travelling to Colombo for sightseeing en route to the airport. Along the way there is a mix of culture, nature and craft, from sacred Buddhist sites to forest trails and landscaped gardens.

Transport, fuel, tolls, parking, a chauffeur guide and daily water are arranged throughout. Entrance fees, accommodation, meals and visa costs are handled separately, leaving the itinerary flexible around your own arrangements.

1 Kandy

Day 1 — Airport → Pinnawala → Kandy

On arrival at Colombo International Airport you are met by a Lakpura chauffeur guide and driven towards Kandy, stopping along the way for a guided visit to a spice garden and a look at local crafts before checking in to your hotel.

Spice and Herbal Garden

A guided tour of a spice and herbal garden introduces plants such as coriander, chilli, cinnamon, cardamom and nutmeg, along with their traditional uses.

Kandyan Arts and Crafts

En route to Kandy you visit workshops showing traditional crafts including gem crafting, woodcarving and batik work.

Temple of the Tooth Relic

This UNESCO World Heritage Site was built in the 16th century to house and protect Lord Buddha's sacred tooth relic. Its passageways and halls are richly decorated in red, cream and black, with carved pillars and gilded statues throughout.

2 Kandy

Day 2 — Kandy → Udawattekele → Peradeniya → Kandy

A day based in and around Kandy combines a forest walk with a visit to one of the island's best-known botanical gardens, before returning to the hotel.

Udawattekele Forest Reserve

This historic forest reserve lies close to the centre of Kandy. Its trails pass birds, monkeys, snakes and other wildlife, along with secluded Buddhist hermitages and ancient rock shelter dwellings hidden within the forest.

Royal Botanical Gardens, Peradeniya

Established in the early 19th century, these gardens cover a large area and hold over 4,000 species of plants, including orchids, spices and medicinal plants. Highlights include the cannonball tree, a suspension bridge, hedge mazes and avenues lined with large, rare trees.

3 Airport

Day 3 — Kandy → Colombo → Airport

After checking out, you travel to Colombo for a city and shopping tour before being transferred to the airport for departure.

Colombo City and Shopping Tour

The tour takes in landmarks of the capital such as the Old Lighthouse, the Old Parliament, Galle Face Hotel, Galle Face Green, Gangarama Temple and the National Museum, along with time to browse malls, boutiques and designer stores around Independence Square and the Race Course.

Is this a private tour?

Yes. The tour is private to your group: your own air-conditioned vehicle and an English-speaking chauffeur guide for all 3 days, with no other travellers joining.

Where does the tour start and end?

Day 1 starts at Colombo airport (CMB) and day 3 ends at Colombo airport (CMB). Every stop in between is reached by road in the same vehicle, so there is no other transport to arrange.

Are hotels included?

The base price covers the vehicle and chauffeur guide. In the booking box you can add hotels for all 2 nights at Budget (3★), Standard (4★) or Luxury (5★ and boutique) level, on half board. Hotels we hold contracts with for your dates are named in the price; for any other night our team books a hotel of the same class after you pay.

What vehicle will we travel in?

It depends on your group: a car for 1–2 guests, a van for 3–5, a large van for 6–8 and a bus for 9–15. Choose the number of guests in the booking box and the price updates to match.

Are entrance fees included?

Not in the base price. Set Tickets to Included in the booking box to add the entrance fees and safari jeeps for the sights on this itinerary; the booking box lists exactly which ones are covered.

Can we have a national guide?

Yes. A chauffeur guide is always included, and you can add a government-licensed national guide who travels with you for the whole tour. Choose it under Guide in the booking box; the vehicle is sized for the extra seat.

Can we change the itinerary or the dates?
