Umandawa Suwadal Rice is Suwandel, one of Sri Lanka's traditional rice varieties, packed in a 500g pouch by Umandawa Global Buddhist Village. It carries its Sinhala name, සුවඳැල්, alongside the English Suwandel, and is sold as Sri Lankan traditional rice, a product of Sri Lanka.
Suwandel is an indigenous heirloom white rice, known for its aroma and for its small grains. It is an older variety that lost ground to faster-growing hybrids, and its revival has given it a place in the Sri Lankan market again.
Umandawa is a Buddhist village in the Kurunegala District of Sri Lanka, built on a large plot of land on a concept of Ven. Siri Samanthabhadra Thero, as a place to step away from worldly life and engage with the basic philosophy of Buddhism. Traditional rice varieties are among the produce sold under its name.
The rice comes in a clear pouch, so the grains are visible beneath the label, which shows a photograph of the Umandawa entrance gateway alongside the Suwandel name. Each pack holds 500g of rice.
