Part of the Buddhist Cultural Centre's Sinhala edition of the Samyutta Nikaya, the Connected Discourses or Kindred Sayings, which stands as the third collection of the Sutta Pitaka within the Pali Tipitaka of Theravada Buddhism. The text is presented in Pali with Sinhala translation, so a reader needs one or both languages to use it. There is no English in it.
What distinguishes the Samyutta Nikaya from the other Nikayas is its arrangement. Rather than ordering discourses by length or by number, it gathers them into samyuttas — groupings held together by a shared subject, a shared interlocutor or a shared setting. These samyuttas are in turn distributed across the sections called vaggas: the Sagatha-vagga, whose suttas carry verse; the Nidana-vagga, concerned largely with causation; the Khandha-vagga, on the aggregates; the Salayatana-vagga, on the sense bases; and the Maha-vagga, which takes in the Noble Eightfold Path and the Four Noble Truths. The effect is that discourses touching on the same doctrinal ground sit beside one another, which is why the collection has long been treated as the place to go when following a single theme through the canon.
The Buddhist Cultural Centre is an established Colombo publisher of Buddhist texts in Sinhala, Pali and English, and its Tipitaka volumes are the editions commonly found in Sri Lankan temple libraries and in the hands of lay students. This is one volume of a set rather than a standalone book, and it is intended for reading and reference over time rather than at a sitting — a working text for monastics, Dhamma teachers, students of Pali and Sinhala readers who want the discourses in the original alongside translation.
