Sunquick Pink Guava and Strawberry is a squash concentrate made in Sri Lanka: a thick, deep-pink syrup that turns into a full jug of fruit drink once it meets water. The bottle carries the Sunquick heart logo and the words Pink Guava and Strawberry Squash Concentrate in English, Sinhala and Tamil.
The recipe starts with sugar, guava puree and strawberry, and adds grape and apple juice from concentrate, natural guava and strawberry flavouring, and vitamins C and E. Its pink colour comes from carmine, which is of animal origin, and the concentrate contains milk and sulphite.
It is a concentrate, not a ready-to-drink juice. Dilute one part with nine parts water, or to taste; the 300ml bottle makes 3 litres of drink. Once opened, store it at room temperature and finish it within 8 weeks.
Sunquick began as CO-RO, founded in 1942 outside Copenhagen by the Danish brothers Flemming and Jep Petersen. The Sri Lankan concentrates are produced at Munagama, near Horana.
