Photograph · AI-enhanced

This lapel pin carries the full design of the Sri Lankan national flag — known as the Lion Flag — rendered in coloured enamel on gold-coloured metal and finished with a clear domed resin coating that deepens the colours and protects the surface. The front face shows the crimson field with its golden lion passant holding a kastane ceremonial sword, the saffron and green vertical stripes at the hoist side, and the gold border with four bo-leaf motifs at the inner corners. The reverse is plain gold-coloured metal fitted with a single butterfly clutch clasp, the standard pinch fastening that slides onto a pin post and holds the piece firmly to fabric.

Every element of the flag's design carries meaning that has been present since the current form was officially adopted on 22 May 1972. The golden lion represents the Sinhalese ethnic majority and is a symbol of bravery; the sword it holds stands for the sovereignty of the nation. The green stripe acknowledges the Muslim community, the saffron stripe the Hindu Tamil community, and the gold border the wider minority communities of the country. The four bo leaves — one at each corner — reference Buddhism and its four virtues: Kindness, Compassion, Equanimity, and Happiness.

The pin is available in several designs and size options. Design A comes in three sizes — 2 cm × 1 cm, 3 cm × 2 cm, and 4 cm × 3 cm — giving a choice from something very discreet to a pin with real presence on a jacket lapel. Design B is offered at 2 cm × 1 cm, Design C at 3 cm × 3 cm, and Design D at 1 cm × 1 cm. Design E has a circular form with a 2 cm diameter. The visual differences across designs are apparent in the product images: some show a glossy domed finish over a deep maroon field, while others present a brighter red field with an antiqued, more matte gold treatment.

By convention, flag lapel pins are worn on the left lapel — a widely observed etiquette for pins representing a nation, though not a formal regulatory requirement. The butterfly clutch fastening makes it straightforward to attach and remove the pin from a jacket, a blazer, a shirt collar, or a bag strap without leaving any visible mark on the fabric. These pins are a compact and understated way to express connection to Sri Lanka at cultural gatherings, national commemorations, diaspora events, or simply as an everyday accessory.
