Ransaru Wildcrafted Dehydrated Blue Lotus (Nymphaea Nouchali) Flower Pack

From$13.00

Ransaru's Wildcrafted Dehydrated Blue Lotus pack contains whole dried flowers of Nymphaea nouchali — the species better known in Sri Lanka as Nil Manel, the country's national flower since 1986. Despite the trade name 'blue lotus', Nymphaea nouchali is a water lily of the family Nymphaeaceae, not a true lotus, and is a distinct species from the Egyptian variety. The flowers are wildcrafted, meaning they are gathered from the plant's natural freshwater habitats — ponds, shallow lakes, and the still margins of slow-moving rivers — rather than from cultivated crops.

Nymphaea nouchali grows across Sri Lanka's dry zone, with concentrations around Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Jaffna, and Kurunegala, as well as in natural wetlands and buffalo ponds throughout the island. The flowers are perennial and occur in white, pink, and violet-blue colour forms; when viewed from above, the star-shaped arrangement of angular petals — typically thirteen to fifteen surrounding a cluster of yellow stamens — gives the bloom a particularly striking geometry. The dried flowers in this pack retain those purple petals and vivid yellow stamen centres, visible through the transparent front window of the kraft stand-up pouch.

Dehydration preserves the form and fragrance of the whole flowers. The pack itself is a kraft-paper stand-up pouch with a zip-lock seal, practical for storage and reuse. The label is printed in both English and Sinhala, reflecting the flower's deep cultural familiarity across the island. Frames showing the dried contents alongside a fresh bloom make the quality of the whole-flower format easy to judge before purchase.

The flowers are commonly prepared as an infusion by steeping the dried flower heads in hot water, which produces a lightly coloured liquid with a soft floral character. The label imagery shows exactly this — a glass cup of brewed liquid beside a small pile of dried flower heads — suggesting the most straightforward way to use the contents. The flowers are also used in ceremonial and ornamental contexts, reflecting the plant's long-standing significance in Buddhist and Hindu cultural practice across South and Southeast Asia.

Because this product is wildcrafted from Sri Lanka's natural waterways, it carries the variability of a hand-gathered botanical rather than a standardised agricultural crop. The zip-lock seal is designed to keep the dried flowers fresh between uses. The Sinhala label reads 'විප්ලිත නීල් මාභෝල් මල්', confirming the product's local identity and origin for customers familiar with the flower in its native context.
