Nawarathna Kalkaya is a recognised formulation within Sri Lanka's formal Ayurvedic medicine tradition, prepared in the classical kalka form — a dense, paste-like preparation made by grinding dried herbs together. Pasyale Ayurveda Osu (Pvt) Ltd has been producing Ayurvedic and herbal preparations from its facility on Dalupitiya Road, Mahara, Kadawatha since 1960. The preparation brings together seven ingredients: a trachyspermum seed known in Sinhala as asamodagam; clove (karabu neti); Glycyrrhiza glabra, the true licorice known locally as wel mee; Picrorhiza glabra, the bitter herb katukarosana; Nigella sativa, or kaluduru; cumin seed (suduru); and bees' honey, which binds the herbs into the characteristic dark paste visible through the pouch. Each ingredient is a plant or natural substance long used within the Ayurvedic system of the island.
The product comes in a silver foil flat pouch with a yellow label, and the pack weighs 50 g. It is intended to be taken in the manner of a traditional kalka preparation — a small quantity of the paste administered orally, typically alongside an appropriate liquid.
