The Navodya NC-01 is a table-top coconut scraper from Sri Lanka, a hand-cranked grater for the grated coconut that so many recipes call for, tropical recipes above all. This is the original Navodya brand model, built from stainless steel and fitted with a vacuum base.
The body is a stainless steel column that widens into a bell-shaped foot. A crank arm with a turned wooden grip is fitted to one side, and on the other a steel shaft carries the scraping head, a cluster of serrated steel leaves arranged around the shaft so that their toothed edges form a rounded, star-shaped cutter.
In place of a clamp, the scraper stands on its vacuum base: a black rubber ring around the underside of the steel foot, with a small red-tipped lever set just above it. The whole unit is free-standing, with nothing to screw to the edge of a table.
The label on the body reads Distributed and Manufacture by Navodya, with the Navodya emblem of a wheat wreath inside a cog, and the name Navodya is also printed around the base. It is a manual tool with no motor or cable, turned entirely by hand.
