Finely ground black pepper, packed by Malwatte in a 100g printed card carton. The powder gives an even, sharp heat that blends straight into a dish, with no specks to crack or grind.
Black pepper is the dried, unripe berry of the Piper nigrum vine, ground here to a fine powder with nothing added, according to the maker. Malwatte Valley Plantations began growing pepper in 2011 and processes spices in its own factory; the maker says the International Pepper Community named it Sri Lanka's largest pepper grower in 2016.
In the pack
- 100g black pepper powder
- Printed card carton, dark photographic design with the green Malwatte panel, Sinhala and Tamil names on the front
In the kitchen
Season soups, sauces, marinades, mince and egg dishes, or add it to Sri Lankan curries and stir-fries towards the end of cooking. It is also handy for dusting over salads and sandwiches. A 100g carton suits cooks who reach for pepper every day.
Storage
Keep the carton tightly closed, or tip the contents into an airtight jar once opened, and store it in a cool, dry place away from sunlight.
Malwatte is the food brand of Malwatte Valley Plantations PLC of Colombo, a Sri Lankan grower, manufacturer and exporter of tea and spices.
