The Lakpura® Moringa Plant is a living sapling of Moringa oleifera — the drumstick tree — supplied in a black polythene nursery bag, rooted and ready for transplanting into your garden. It is one of the most useful trees a home gardener in a tropical or subtropical climate can grow: fast-moving, undemanding, and productive from root to canopy, with leaves, flowers, and the long ridged pods that are a fixture of Sri Lankan cooking all available from a single tree.

Moringa oleifera is native to the Indian subcontinent and has been cultivated across tropical Asia, Africa, and the Middle East for generations. In maturity it becomes a small, open-crowned deciduous tree with corky grey bark and feathery, pale-green foliage — leaves that are bi- to tripinnately compound, with small oval leaflets arranged in neat rows along each stem. The pods that give it the common name drumstick are long, slender, and sharply ridged, reaching a considerable length at full size, and are the part most widely recognised in South Asian kitchens. The flowers, young leaves, and twigs are equally edible and find their way into dishes across the regions where the tree grows.

As a garden tree, Moringa oleifera is unusually forgiving. It thrives in warm climates with good drainage and tolerates drought, thin soils, and periods of neglect that would stress most edible plants. It does not do well in waterlogged or heavy clay soils, but in almost any other ground — and in the warm lowland conditions that cover much of Sri Lanka — it establishes readily. Growth is quick, and a well-placed tree will repay the space generously.

The sapling is presented in a small black nursery polythene bag filled with soil, which keeps the root system intact during transit and makes transplanting straightforward. When you are ready to plant, choose a sunny, open position with good drainage, water it in well, and allow the tree room to develop its characteristic spreading crown.

The pods shown alongside the sapling illustrate what the mature tree produces: long, ridged, deep-green drums that are split and used in curries, stews, and other cooked preparations across Sri Lankan and South Asian cooking. The leaves can be used fresh or dried. Growing your own means a standing supply close at hand, from a tree that asks for very little in return.
