Koggala Lake sits among mangroves and small islands in the south of Sri Lanka, and a guided boat safari is a straightforward way to see it. The trip lasts 1½ to 2 hours across calm water, with safety gear provided and guidance throughout. It is a quiet cruise built around nature, the biodiversity of the lake and time spent with local people.
Highlights:
- Koggala Lake
- Cinnamon Island visit
- Flora and fauna of the mangrove ecosystem
- Birdwatching: Kingfishers, Eagles, Egrets and Herons
- Monkeys, water monitors and occasional crocodile sightings
- Guided tours with English-speaking guides
Extras:
- Fish Therapy: LKR 1,000 per person
Experience:
The route includes a stop at Cinnamon Island, where you can see how cinnamon is traditionally cultivated and try a complimentary cinnamon drink prepared on the spot by the islanders. The boat then carries on through the mangrove tunnels, where the flora and fauna of this wetland ecosystem are close at hand on both sides.
There is a good deal of wildlife on the lake. Look out for the Sri Lankan Black Monkey (Purple-faced Leaf Monkey) and the Toque Macaques, which guests may feed during the tour. Birdlife includes Kingfishers, Eagles, Egrets and Herons. Water Monitors and Land Monitors are often seen, and with some luck a Crocodile, which is a rarer sighting.
Every tour is led by boatmen who speak English, and a Russian-speaking guide can be arranged on request. The aim is a safe, unhurried and worthwhile experience on Koggala Lake.
