About this experience
Rising early pays off on this private guided hike to the peak of Ella Rock, one of the highest viewpoints in the area around Ella. Your experienced local guide meets you in Ella Town at 6:00 am and leads you through the countryside along the best routes towards the base of the rock. As you make your way through the landscape, you pass tea plantations where pluckers are already heading out to start their morning — a quiet and unhurried introduction to the hills before the climb begins. The hike takes roughly three hours in total, returning you to Ella Town at around 9:00 am. The minimum age for participation is 10 years.
The track up to the peak is quite clear and the difficulty is rated medium to low, though the slopes are real and the ascent is steady. Comfortable walking shoes are strongly recommended. Do pack sufficient drinking water and carry a little salt or lime as well, since leeches are common along this route, particularly in the wetter stretches of terrain. Along the way you can look out for the distant Namunukula Range and Little Adam's Peak appearing through the trees and across the rolling green countryside.
Arriving at the summit, you are met with a steep drop on the far side that opens up an uninterrupted panorama across the hills and valleys. With the sun rising higher over the landscape, the views are particularly striking in the early morning light. Identifiable landmarks from the peak include the Bandarawela Range, Poonagala Hills, Narangala, the Ella Gap, and the Badulla train tracks winding through the valley far below. It is well worth bringing a camera.
