A scenic train journey is one of the must-do experiences for anyone visiting Sri Lanka. However, due to extremely high demand and limited seat availability, securing train tickets can be very challenging.
Sri Lanka Railways releases tickets to the general public only 30 days before the travel date, and popular routes often sell out within minutes.
As a Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) accredited tour operator, we maintain a limited allocation of train tickets for guests who have booked holidays with us where a scenic train journey forms part of their itinerary. From time to time, we may also have additional tickets available due to last-minute cancellations or itinerary changes, and we are pleased to offer these to other travellers whenever possible.
Please note the following conditions before making a reservation:
- Payment does not guarantee a confirmed ticket. Your reservation will be processed based on ticket availability. If we are unable to secure your requested seats, we will make every reasonable effort to obtain suitable alternatives. If we are ultimately unsuccessful, your payment will be refunded in full.
- Accurate passport details are required. We require either clear passport copies or accurate passport numbers for all passengers, as tickets must be issued under the correct passport details. Incorrect information may result in passengers being denied boarding by Sri Lanka Railways.
- The requested travel class is subject to availability. While you may reserve a specific class (e.g. First Class), availability cannot be guaranteed. If we are only able to secure a lower class than the one you paid for, we will automatically refund the applicable fare difference.
- E-tickets will be issued approximately six (6) hours before departure. We continue working until the last possible moment to secure the best available seats for our customers. For this reason, your e-ticket will only be released shortly before your scheduled departure.

This ticket covers a seat on one of Sri Lanka Railways' two named express services — the Podi Menike (Train No. 1005) or the Udarata Menike (Train No. 1015) — travelling from Ella Railway Station up through the central highlands to Ambewela. The journey runs in the direction that climbs rather than descends, tracing the old colonial tea line through some of the most dramatic mountain terrain in South Asia. Both trains are modern blue-liveried services on the Colombo–Badulla Main Line, and your reserved seat will be confirmed on whichever of the two services is allocated at the time of booking.
From Ella, which sits at around a thousand metres above sea level, the line winds upward through a sequence of intermediate stations: Heel Oya, Kinigama, and Bandarawela before reaching Haputale, then on through Idalgashinna, Ohiya — the rail gateway to Horton Plains National Park — and Pattipola, which stands at the highest point on the entire Sri Lankan rail network. Beyond Pattipola the train passes through a summit tunnel before arriving at Ambewela, a hill station at roughly 1,848 metres in the Nuwara Eliya District, set among wide open grasslands and the New Galway tea planting country. The total journey runs for just under two hours, through cloud forest, tea-covered slopes, deep valleys and tunnels cut into the rock during the British colonial era. Travellers on the No. 1015 Udarata Menike will also call at Kithal Ella, one stop beyond Ella. Please confirm the current timetable closer to your travel date, as Sri Lanka Railways periodically revises departure and arrival times.
There are two classes of seat. First Class places passengers in an air-conditioned saloon with numbered, reserved seating; the windows here are fixed and sealed. Second Class is non-air-conditioned, with windows that open fully and ceiling fans overhead — the class that lets the cool hill-country air into the carriage. Neither class passes the Nine Arch Bridge, which lies on the opposite side of Ella toward Demodara; the landscape on this leg is altogether different: open grassland, high moorland and the mist-wrapped upper slopes of the Uva highlands.

A few practical points matter before you book. Payment alone does not guarantee a confirmed seat — your reservation is processed against actual availability, and if no seat can be secured you will receive a full refund. Because tickets are issued against passport details by Sri Lanka Railways, accurate passport information for every passenger is required at the time of booking; an error in those details may mean denial of boarding. If only a lower class than the one you paid for is available, the fare difference will be refunded automatically. Your e-ticket will be sent approximately six hours before departure, as the team continues working to secure seats until the last practical moment. The service includes all applicable taxes and service charges; transfers to or from Ella or Ambewela stations, meals and drinks, and personal expenses are not included.
